Domain name – What is a domain name?

A domain name, often known as a website address, is the name entered into a browser to access a certain website. Twitter’s domain name, for example, is twitter.com. It’s the name by which your website will be recognized and how people will find it on the internet.

Choosing the correct domain name is crucial. Your domain name will be one of the most essential components of your online identity, just as your business name is one of the most identifiable components of your brand identification in the real world.
It’s the first thing your clients will put into their browser or find on search engines like Google or Bing to get to your website.

Different types of domain names

TLDs (top level domains) are a collection of various sorts of domain names. We’ve all seen a few letters appended to the end of a website’s name, such as  .com, .net, and .org. There are also Country Code TLDs, which represent a country’s code, such as .uk (United Kingdom), .us (United States), and so on.

You may also notice that certain websites have the www prefix and question if yours does too. The prefix is purely a matter of personal preference, and whether or not your website has one makes no effect. When you install the program to design the website, you can choose your preference.

If you choose using free hosting or try one of the hosted website
solutions very often you will see your website name will be in this form – yourwebsite.hostedname.com.

This means your website does not have a unique name and instead is hosted under a subdomain of the hosted solution provider. You have given someone else ownership of your name, and maintaining your website name in this format does not appear professional.
